Shipping Material
Corrugated cardboard is sturdy and lightweight, making a perfect packaging material. Corrugated cardboard is used to ship nearly 90 percent of all products in the Europe. Corrugated cardboard was first approved for shipping in the Europe in 1903.
Low Costs
Cardboard is inexpensive to make, and its light weight makes it an inexpensive shipping material. According to Corrugated.org, the cost of cardboard is only 1 to 4 percent of the value of the goods the cardboard contains during shipping.
Cardboard Ingredients
Cardboard is most commonly made from paper pulp. Cardboard can also be made from straw, old cardboard and old newspapers.
Environmentally Safe
Cardboard is a biodegradable product that can be safely disposed of and recycled. Cardboard, due to its ingredients, is also nontoxic.
First Patent
The first patent for a cardboard product came in 1856. The newly patented material was used for the sweatbands in high hats worn by Englishmen.
What is corrugated?
Basic raw materials
The papers used in the production of corrugated are specific grades called «Linerboard» and «Fluting Medium».
The adhesive which is applied to the tips of the flutes is starch usually manufactured from products of natural origin, the most common being maize (corn).
These three layers of paper are assembled in a way which gives the overall structure a better strength than that of each distinct layer. This ingenious construction forms a series of connected arches which are well known for their ability to support strong weights. Arches have been used for structural engineering since ancient times and are commonly seen in the architecture of bridges and gothic cathedrals.
This structure gives corrugated board considerable rigidity and resistance. The air circulating in the flutes also serves as an insulator which provides excellent protection against temperature variations. It also provides a cushioning effect.
Renewable and natural resource
Corrugated is made from papers made up from cellulose fibres, which can be virgin or recycled, or a mixture of both. This makes corrugated a renewable natural resource. Re-cycling in a closed loop, such as the paper cycle, can be seen as re-use of the basic materials.
Construction Types
There are many types of corrugated, each with different flute sizes and profiles which offer many combinations designed to create packaging with different characteristics and performances.
The corrugated board is then cut and folded into an infinite variety of shapes and sizes to become corrugated packaging.
Corrugated is a high performance packaging material designed to pack, protect and promote products.
